Route change on walking day 2 in Wijchen

Safety and flow are important
Estimated reading time 3 minutes

During the 107th edition of the 4Days Marches, several important changes will be made to the route through Wijchen on the second walking day. These changes are intended to enhance safety and improve the flow of walkers.

Route Change

On the second walking day of the 4Days Marches, the route for the 40- and 50-kilometer participants will change within the municipality of Wijchen. In previous editions, these groups walked via Campuslaan and Zuiderdreef, but this year they will follow a slightly different course. After passing Sportcentrum De Arcus, participants will turn right onto Oosterweg and continue to Meester van Coothlaan. There, they will turn left toward the police station and Diepvoorde. This change has been implemented to improve access to the surrounding neighborhoods, enhance safety for both walkers and spectators, and better manage the flow of walkers.

Alternative route during busy times

The bypass via Meester van Coothlaan, which was first introduced last year, will also be open this year in case of heavy congestion at the Market. This alternative route is available for 30-kilometer walkers and helps prevent bottlenecks at the Market in Wijchen.

Hans Teunissen, Head of Mobility at the 4DAAGSE Foundation, emphasizes the importance of these measures: "Safety and flow are crucial for the success of the 4Days Marches, as well as for the comfort and experience of the walkers. The route change in Wijchen has been implemented to improve safety, optimize access to surrounding residential areas, and make the flow of walkers smoother. Additionally, the bypass remains available as a flexible measure during times of high congestion, allowing us to alleviate areas such as the Market in Wijchen, where it can traditionally become very busy. We work closely with the involved municipalities to continuously improve the route each year, keeping both participants and the surrounding environment in mind.”

Relocation of VIP stage and review point

Due to the use of the bypass last year, not all walkers passed by the VIP stage at Wijchen Castle. This led to disappointment among some walkers. As a result, it has been decided to relocate the VIP stage with the review point to the Huis van de Gemeente on Kasteellaan. Here, all walkers will pass by, even during heavy congestion at the Market.

Project 'Between Castle and Wijchens Meer'

In addition, the municipality of Wijchen is working on the 'Between Castle and Wijchens Meer' project. This project focuses on the redevelopment of the area between Wijchen Castle and Wijchens Meer. This project will not affect the passage of the 4Days Marches through Wijchen.

A day full of cheerfulness

Renske Helmer-Englebert, Mayor of Wijchen: "As every year, we are looking forward to the Day of Wijchen. A day full of cheerfulness for both the walkers and the visitors. Behind the scenes, we are already busy with preparations, with safety being a key focus. With the slightly adjusted route, we will ensure that on July 16th, everyone can continue walking comfortably!"
