The Four Days Marches apps: 4Walker & 4Follower

Participants, supporters and visitors can use the official Four Days Marches apps during the 101st Four Days Marches. The app for participants (4Walker) specifies the locations of medical support posts, toilets, and water stations and provides information about your location on the route, your average walking speed, estimated time of arrival and the weather. It's also possible to track fellow walkers. The 4Walker app is also one of the media channels used by the organisation to provide participants with information on marching days.

People at home can use the 4Follower app. this app lets you track walkers and send them location-based messages. The app also provides information on parking and public transport, as well as other things that are useful to know when visiting Nijmegen during the Four Days Marches.

The apps are available for smartphones and can be downloaded in the App Store and Google Play Store. The 4Walker app is available to participants and can be found by entering ‘4Walker’ in the app stores. The 4Follower app is available to everyone and can be found by entering ‘4Follower’.

Using the app - tips & tricks

Just like with all apps, you simply need to try it out to get to grips with how it works. Needless to say, you will not be able to use all of the features until the marches have started. A few tips on using the app are given below. If you still have questions after reading this information, you will be able to ask them using Twitter once the apps are available for download. New information on using the app, or on solutions, will be tweeted from the 4Walker/4Follower @4Dapp Twitter account.

The first time you open the app, you will be asked to enter your registration number to verify whether you are registered for the 2017 event. People who are not registered cannot use the app. Your registration number is printed on the confirmation of your registration. So the registration number you need to use in the app is not your walking number!
When you use the app, you will be asked to select a username. This is the name your followers will see. You are tracked using your walking number and followers you do not know can also enter this number. If you do not wish to be easily recognised, we advise you to choose an alias (e.g. Wild Walker) to identify yourself to your friends and family.
When you open the app for the first time, an introduction screen will appear explaining the app's features. This screen can also be accessed through the menu at any time.
Running this app on your smartphone will consume additional battery power, and will naturally also use your smartphone's memory.
When a great many people gather in one place, this puts a lot of pressure on providers and may result in your mobile coverage not being up to the usual standard. This of course affects the use and performance of the app.
Free (but limited) Wi-Fi is available to participants at both De Wedren and Heumensoord to ensure that everyone's start and finish details can be processed right away. You will need to log on to the Wi-Fi network first (once only). The Wi-Fi network on the Wedren is called '4WALKER'. The password is '4WALKER17'.
On walking days, the app is activated by scanning your wristband at the start.
Your telephone's location will be sent roughly once every 10 minutes if you have a good internet connection.
You can press the button at the end of the time bar to refresh the app manually.
Read the tweets from the 4Walker/4Follower @4Dapp Twitter account.

How accurately can I be tracked?

Participants can only be tracked between the start and finish. Neither the organisation nor your followers receive data on your whereabouts before the start and after the finish.
The app has many features and options, but it is a misconception that participants can be tracked in real time on the route. The app sends location data from your telephone to the server at regular intervals. Your data is processed on the server (Where are you? What time are you expected to reach the finish?) and made available to your followers. Your location data is sent roughly once every 10 minutes.
It goes without saying that you need an internet connection to get the most out of the app, but unfortunately it is often difficult to get a good connection at major events, including the Four Days Marches. The app also works offline and bases its calculations on the last location determined and the average walking speed. A notification will appear at the top of the screen to indicate that you are offline. If you are offline for an extended period, the time bar will turn orange to indicate that the app is not connected and that the time calculations are based on expectations. As soon as you are back online, the time bar will turn red, the data will be refreshed and your actual location will be determined. The time of the last update is displayed on-screen.
The app will issue a notification letting your followers know that you are approaching the finish when you are 1.5km away.

Importance of the app for the organisation

Your use of the app will help to ensure that the Four Days Marches runs smoothly. The data from the app will enable the Four Days Marches organisers to monitor the distribution of participants over the route. This information - from thousands of walkers - is highly important to the organisers in monitoring what is going on along the route and taking any action required. It tells them things such as which parts of the route are (too) busy, and helps them decide whether to put back the finish time, or send additional blister prickers out to the second medical support post. The data obtained on the marching days through this app will only be used during the Four Days Marches. By logging on to the app, you are consenting to Stichting DE 4DAAGSE tracking your movements on the route.
